8 Ways to Show Your Dog You Care

Your dog is a member of your family, and deserves all of the love that you have to give. However, because dogs are not people, you have to be creative about how to show them that you care. Let’s take a look at 8 different ways that you can do just that.

Put Down Your Phone

One of the greatest things you can do for anyone, including your pet is to give them your undivided attention. In this day and age, so many of us are guilty of always being on our telephone, or at least having one eye on it at all times. Putting your phone away means that your dog will be given all of the love and attention that you have, in the present moment.

Train Your Dog with Positive Reinforcement

There is nothing better for your dog than teaching him or her through positive reinforcement. Your dog has an inborn desire to stay occupied, play and make you happy. When your dog does something that you want him to, and in turn you provide him positive reinforcement, a stronger bond between the two of you is created. Positive reinforcement can come in the form of praise, food or play for example. You are basically showing your dog that what they are doing is pleasing you, and here is the reward for doing so. Training your dog is a great way to show them that you care.

Look Them in the Eyes

Eye contact is all about communication. When you make eye contact with a person or animal, it shows them that you are giving them your full attention, and that you are connecting with them. Taking this further, a 2015 study in Japan showed that a person staring into their dog’s eyes gives the same biological triggers as a mother looking at her child. In both cases, Oxytocin is released both in the owner and in the dog, which is basically a feel-good chemical. Why not take the opportunity to tell your dog how much you love them while you are looking into their eyes?

Lean on Them

You may be surprised that I don’t mention giving your dog a great big hug. This is because many pets don’t particularly enjoy getting hugged. In doggie language, the way that dogs show you love is by leaning on you instead. So, the next time that your dog puts their weight on you, lean right on back to show them that you care about them too.

Let Them Sleep with You

Whether we are talking about people or animals, we are the most vulnerable when we are sleeping. Allowing your pet to sleep with you shows them the ultimate display of love and trust for them. If it makes sense to allow your dog to sleep in your bed with you, cuddle up! If this situation won’t work for you, try creating a space that is just for them, such as buying them a special doggie bed and then placing a piece of your clothing inside of it so that it has your smell on it.

Groom Them

As the temperature begins to warm up, your dog’s coat will begin to shed more and more. This means dog hair will begin to adorn your clothing and show up all around your house. Why not simply take 10 minutes out of your day to thoroughly brush your dog? It will feel good to both of you. It will prevent your dog’s coat from becoming matted, and at the same time it will feel like a gentle massage to him.

Read to Your Dog

Reading to your dog is an excellent way to strengthen the bond between you and your canine companion. Not only will it mean a lot to your dog, but it is a great way to improve your public speaking skills. Specifically, it is beneficial for your child to read to your dog, as it will instill confidence in your child. The bottom line is that reading to your dog is just another way to share quality time with your precious pet.

Rub Your Dog’s Ears

A majority of dogs absolutely love to have their ears rubbed. This is because a dog’s ears are full of nerve endings that when rubbed, trigger impulses all throughout the dog’s body, in turn releasing powerful endorphins. These natural hormones make the dog feel loved. When you rub your dog’s ears to show them affection, you can be certain that they understand what you are trying to say.

Are you in love with your furry friend? Don’t limit yourself to these ideas. We know how creative you can be. Your dog is sure to notice and appreciate any effort you put forth to make them the star of the show.
